In a major move, the Maharashtra government has launched a new initiative to tackle pollution and encourage the use of newer vehicles. The policy offers a 15% vehicle tax rebate for those who voluntarily scrap their old vehicles.
This decision, approved during a recent cabinet meeting, was led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. It is part of a broader effort to clean up the environment in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, and Nagpur.
Key Highlights of the Vehicle Tax Rebate Maharashtra Policy
Under the new rule, anyone who scraps an old vehicle at a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) will receive a 15% rebate on the one-time tax for a new vehicle.
Previously, the rebate was only 10%, and it came with restrictions on the age of the vehicle. Now, the government has simplified the process by offering a flat 15% rebate across categories.
Eligibility for Transport and Non-Transport Vehicles
For transport vehicles, the 15% rebate will be applicable for eight years from the registration date of the new vehicle.
For non-transport vehicles, the benefit will continue for 15 years from the date of registration.
Moreover, this benefit applies to two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and light motor vehicles. However, the scrapping must be completed within three years from the date of the official policy notification.

How to Claim the Vehicle Tax Rebate
To avail the rebate, owners must scrap their vehicle at a certified RVSF and obtain a scrapping certificate. This certificate must be used to claim the rebate within two years of issuance.
This policy not only benefits buyers of new vehicles but also helps remove outdated, polluting vehicles from the roads. It supports both environmental goals and automotive industry growth.
Conclusion
The Maharashtra government’s 15% tax rebate policy is a smart move to cut vehicle pollution. It also helps replace the state’s aging vehicle fleet. By offering direct tax savings, the policy encourages people to scrap old vehicles. This will likely boost car sales and improve air quality in major cities.
