PMPML to Install CCTV Cameras at 15 Depots for Enhanced Security

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced the installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at its 15 depots across Pune. This move aims to tackle the increasing cases of theft and security breaches at these locations. PMPML authorities have assured that the installation will be carried out on a war footing basis, ensuring each depot is equipped with at least 32 cameras. Moreover, this initiative aligns with PMPML’s commitment to providing a safe and secure travel experience for all commuters.

Why PMPML is Installing CCTV Cameras?

PMPML operates 1,600 buses that transport around 12 lakh passengers daily. To enhance security at key depots, PMPML is deploying high-precision cameras with night vision capabilities. These cameras will help curb crimes like theft, illegal activities, and crimes against women.

Key Objectives of CCTV Installation:

  • Enhancing Passenger Safety: Ensuring commuters, especially women, feel secure while traveling.
  • Monitoring Illegal Activities: Keeping a check on suspicious activities and unauthorized access.
  • Preventing Thefts: Securing depots from frequent incidents of theft and property damage.
  • Surveillance of BRTS Stops: Strengthening security at high-risk locations.

Depots Under CCTV Surveillance

To improve overall security, PMPML is prioritizing major depots for surveillance. The following bus depots will be equipped with CCTV cameras

  • Swargate, Katraj, Pune Railway Station, Pimpri, Bhosari
  • Narvir Tanajiwadi, Kothrud, Hadapsar, Bhekrai Nagar, Shewalewadi
  • Balewadi, Baner, Wagholi, Nigdi

BRTS Security Measures

PMPML has faced criticism over the lack of functional surveillance, particularly on the Swargate-Katraj BRTS route, where criminal activities had surged due to non-functional or missing cameras. Unfortunately, passengers were frequently targeted at major bus stops such as:

  • Swargate, Katraj, Deccan Gymkhana, Ganpati Matha, PMC Headquarters
  • Pune Station, Khadki Bazar, Hadapsar, Shewalewadi, Marketyard
  • Balewadi, Baner, Narvir Tanajiwadi

To address these concerns, PMPML is actively working to improve security infrastructure at these locations, ensuring commuters feel safer while using public transport.
