EPFO Rolls Out Aadhaar-Based Face Authentication for UAN Activation

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched a significant digital upgrade, now enabling employees to generate and activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) using Aadhaar-based face authentication through the UMANG App and AadhaarFaceRD App.

This feature streamlines the process, reduces data entry errors, and removes the need for employer involvement.

What Has Changed in UAN Generation?

Previously, the process of UAN generation was managed largely by employers. However, frequent issues like mismatches in personal details (e.g., father’s name, mobile number) and delays in sharing UAN details with employees often led to problems.

Despite EPFO allocating over 1.26 crore UANs in FY 2024-25, members activated only 35% of them. Activation required a separate Aadhaar OTP step, causing further confusion.

Now, with the new Aadhaar-based face authentication method, employees can independently generate and activate their UAN in one seamless step.

How Aadhaar-Based Face Authentication Works

  • Employees need to download the UMANG App and the AadhaarFaceRD App.
  • The app uses the camera to match the user’s face with Aadhaar records.
  • Once validated, UAN is generated and activated instantly.
  • The mobile number is automatically verified via Aadhaar.
  • No employer approval is required at any stage.

Key Benefits of the New UAN Activation Process

1. 100% identity verification through Aadhaar facial match

2. Automatic mobile number verification linked to Aadhaar

3. No dependency on employers for UAN generation

4. UAN is activated instantly during the registration process

5. Immediate access to EPFO services like passbook, KYC updates, and claim submissions

6. Fewer errors and faster onboarding for new employees

Face Authentication for Existing UAN Holders and Pensioners

Even EPFO members who already have a UAN but haven’t activated it can now complete activation using face authentication via UMANG.

In addition, EPFO plans to expand face authentication services for pensioners, enabling them to submit digital life certificates (Jeevan Pramaan) with the help of youth volunteers from My Bharat, right at their doorstep.

This initiative is a part of EPFO’s broader digital transformation to simplify processes and improve user accessibility.
